Curriculum: Aboriginal/ Islander Issues

This subject addresses issues of social justice and Indigenous rights through an examination of the challenges facing teachers when introducing Aboriginal studies and Torres Strait Islander studies in their schools. The subject includes a study of the historical and current position of Indigenous groups in Australia through the examination of a wide range of texts authored by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The issues involved in the incorporation of this content into school curriculum are examined.

Learning Objectives:

  1. an appreciation of the range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writings and other public expressions;
  2. a framework for the development and implementation of Aboriginal studies and Torres Strait Islander studies based on the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
  3. an understanding of issues of power in relation to curriculum development and an understanding of the curriculum as a site of contestation;
  4. an understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal studies and Torres Strait Island studies as part of the on-going struggles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for justice;
  5. an ability to construct curriculum in ways that meet the aims, needs, and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Assessment by a two-hour class test (30%); curriculum project and presentation (70%).
