Program Design in Child Care

Available to students in their final year of study for Bachelor of Educational Services (Child Care).

This subject will explore current issues in theory and practice which effectively inform the design of programs for young children in a variety of care settings. In the course of the subject students will be expected to engage in critically reflective practice and participatory action research. Assessment for this subject will enable students to pursue a relevant topic of personal/professional interest. Content of the subject will include: critically reflective practice; recreating the child-centred learning environment; collaborative planning for negotiated inclusive, community centred curriculum; facilitating children’s learning and development through play; decisions in theory and practice.
Learning Objectives:
- examine and critically analyse the interactive processes and contexts of play and learning;
- examine and critically reflect on the effect of discourses within particular contexts and in particular moments;
- demonstrate an understanding of critical components of program design in child care centres;
- recognise and articulate the relationship between theory and practice;
- evaluate and review usual practice within child care settings;
- satisfactorily complete 10 days of supervised practicum in a child care centre.
Assessment by two assignments (50% each). In addition, award of a passing grade will be subject to satisfactory completion of the associated practicum.
