School Choirs and Ensembles

20 lectures, 20 hours workshops. First semester.

Available to level 4 undergraduate education students.

The focus of this subject is the establishment of a performing ensemble (choral or instrumental). The process is examined in detail from the audition procedures, the selection and adaptation of appropriate repertoire, the study and preparation of the scores, the teaching of individual vocal and instrumental parts, rehearsal management including remediation. There is the study of choral and instrumental conducting styles of all basic patterns including the anacrusis, changes of meter and tempo and left hand cueing.Major topics include development of audition criteria, the selection of repertoire, the process of learning music, key issues of pedagogy, ensemble balance and musical interpretation, effective communication of the choral text through good vocal production and diction, rehearsal management and performance evaluation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide the knowledge and skills to audition and cast a choral or instrumental ensemble;
  2. to provide the knowledge of available repertoire, skills in the selection of an appropriate repertoire and the ability to adapt it as necessary to the needs of the group;
  3. to provide the pedagogy to effectively rehearse sectionally and in ensemble;
  4. to provide skills in rehearsal management;
  5. to provide skills in musical direction and conducting;
  6. to provide the knowledge and skills to critique ensemble performances.

Assessment by viva voce (30%); ensemble performance (30%); portfolio (repertoire and preparation) (40%).
