Teaching Exceptional Children

This subject examines four types of exceptionalities found in children, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral problems and giftedness, together with implications for inclusive classroom practices.Content for each category of exceptionality will include an examination of definitions, classifications, causes, identification and assessment procedures and appropriate instructional interventions based on differential assessment. The subject contextualises the education of exceptional children in inclusive classroom settings.
Learning Objectives:
- to provide a knowledge base to students about four areas of exceptionality, namely intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral problems and giftedness;
- to familiarise students with methods of identifying such exceptionalities;
- to acquaint students with the discourse on inclusive educational practices based on social justice principles;
- to present students with a range of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching exceptional children in regular classroom settings.
Assessment by workbook activities (50%); project (50%).
