*Teaching Instrumental Music

Available to BMusEd students enrolled in the Instrumental Music strand. Other students may enrol with the permission of the Dean and the lecturer.

This subject surveys aspects of instruction specific to instrumental music pedagogy. It considers individual and group teaching practices and instrumental ensembles.

Major topics include: methodologies and practices of teaching instrumental music; multi-instrumental music teaching; instructional literature; band and orchestral repertoire; recruitment practices; organisation and rehearsal of instrumental music ensembles; arranging and composing for school bands and orchestras

Learning Objectives:

  1. to acquire knowledge of current instrumental teaching practices
  2. to acquire a broad awareness of modern instrumental teaching methodologies;
  3. to acquire basic familiarity with a wide range of band and orchestral instruments, including their peculiar technical and musical demands;
  4. to acquire a variety of teaching techniques and strategies pertinent to instrumental music instruction;
  5. to acquire knowledge of current methods texts and series for use with all families of instruments;
  6. to become familiar with suitable repertoire for school instrumental ensembles;
  7. to acquire administrative skills necessary for the organisation and rehearsal of instrumental ensembles;
  8. to acquire knowledge and basic skills in arranging for school bands and orchestras.

The nature and percentage of assessment items will be negotiated with students. These may include: viva voce; one short arrangement or composition for both elementary orchestra and concert band; a short written evaluation of an observed community band/orchestral rehearsal.
