Specialist Primary Music Teacher 1

The subject examines important philosophies and approaches relevant to primary teaching, assumptions underlying existing curricula and provides performance and pedagogical skills of singing, movement and instrumental performance.The vocal repertoire studied includes unison songs, rounds, part songs in folk, traditional, popular and classical styles and songs from other cultures.Major topics include: the Dalcroze approach (movement, rhythm and improvisation), the Kodaly sequences (rhythm, melody, form and harmony), the development of the child’s voice, musical direction of the children’s choir, teaching of recorder and percussion and the development of the music curriculum.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop an understanding and a critical reflection on philosophies and issues related to primary school music teaching;
  2. to develop the skills and knowledge of pedagogy to perform and teach singing, movement, percussion and recorder;
  3. to develop knowledge of performance repertoire and its teaching;
  4. to develop skills in the musical direction of children’s choral performance;
  5. to develop skills in the development of music curricula.

Assessment by assignment (30%); portfolio (repertoire and preparation) (30%); performance and viva voce (40%).
