Teaching the Arts for Young Children

The subject introduces students to the KLA arts with particular emphasis on visual art and music for young children to year three. The art strand explores aims, concepts, strategies, art media and techniques, planning for effective teaching and learning, literacy, appraising and evaluation. The critical approach tracks major historical art education trends and recent developments aimed at greater inclusivity. The music strand critically examines a philosophy of music education commonly found in Australian schools. The music development of young children is studied. Movement games and a singing repertoire appropriate for young children are introduced along with associated music skills. This subject requires access to CD-Rom and Web-based material. Students wishing to study this subject off-campus should ensure that they are able to access this material. Infomation on requirements is available from the School of Education.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to create awareness of the unique ways of knowing, which the arts provide, as well as their strengths as sources of self esteem, cultural significance, communication, language development and creative problem solving;
  2. to critically explore trends in arts education philosophy and practice;
  3. to facilitate motivating and inclusive experiences which integrate theory and practice, using a variety of media and pedagogical tools applicable in early childhood arts programs;
  4. to critically review various state, national and international resource, reference and curriculum documents relevant to arts teaching with young children.

Assessment by teaching portfolio (40%); participation (20%); assignment(s) and/or in-class test(s) (40%).
