*Child Development in Social Context

Students acquire a knowledge of the child aged three and over. Through areas of study including the various aspects of development in home, school and community settings, students gain an integrated knowledge of learning and developmental theories and their implications for school settings. These concepts and issues will be developed through observations of and experiences with young children in a variety of settings. The subjects principal themes converge on the preparation of a child study.
Learning Objectives:
- students will be aware of the major theories of child development including those of Piaget, Bruner and Vygotsky;
- students will develop observational skills in the areas of motor, social, cognitive and language development.
Assessment by child study (observational file) (40%); analysis and planning (35%); workbook activities (25%).
