This subject offers students an overview of key issues in schooling. Issues of race, ethnicity and cultural diversity are used as a basis for gaining important insights into the nature of education, central issues in schooling and curriculum, the practice of teaching and potentials for increased equity.
Learning Objectives:
- develop understandings of the inter-relationship between schools and the societies in which they are embedded;
- develop the ability to critically analyse issues related to cultural diversity, race and ethnicity as a means of re-examining schooling in Australia;
- understand issues of systematic and structural inequity within education and society and develop an appreciation of potentials for change;
- appreciate the role of teachers in contributing to an equitable and diverse Australia;
- begin to develop a set of strategies that will enable them in their future role as teachers to implement socially just classroom practices appropriate to the culturally diverse nature of human societies.
Assessment by 2,000 word essay, personal reflection and test.
