Mineral Resources and their Management

An outline of the distribution and abundance of Earth resources in the form of metalliferous ores, industrial minerals and fossil fuels. Elements of resource evaluation, extraction and processing in the context of national and international environmental and socio-economic considerations. Related case studies of resource and environmental management.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide students with an informed perspective of resource utilisation in the context of socio-economic objectives and the environment;
  2. to teach students how complex issues which arise in this area of human activity and are dealt with at technical, commercial and governmental levels;
  3. it is intended in particular for students to work towards a personal perspective of the issues involved through the acquisition and review of knowledge and through debate.

Assessment by a three-hour theory examination (75%); seminar presentation and written report (20%); tutorial and practical tasks (5%).
