Available to civil and environmental engineering students.
Engineering Economics: Economic evaluation of engineering projects; Break-even analysis; Depreciation; Economic life of capital assets.
Accounting for Engineers: Transactions, P & L statement; Balance sheet; Accounting ratios for liquidity, profitability, return on investment etc.
Legal Issues: Contract management; Conflict resolution, Ethics; Patents.
Human Resource Management: Organising, motivating and directing; Productivity and work measurement; Design of work environment.
Operations Management: Forecasting, Inventory management; Location analysis, plant layout and scheduling.
Learning Objectives:
- understand the basic accounting framework and the interpretation of accounting reports, and be able to discuss with accountants, in their language, issues associated with organisational performance;
- develop an attitude for working as a team member and leader, dealing with other people and handling contracts and resolving conflicts;
- acquire an understanding of economic principles of time value of money, depreciation, inflation and break-even and its application to the evaluation of engineering projects;
- learn the tools and concepts relevant to organising, planning and managing engineering projects;
- understand the principles of correctly managing production systems.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
