Properties of plastic and hardened concrete, mix design, concrete construction. Strength and durability of hardened concrete, reinforcing and prestressing steel. Reinforced Concrete : transformed section analysis of uncracked and cracked reinforced beams; ultimate bending strength of singly and doubly reinforced beams, T and I beams; ductility; anchorage and stress development, reinforcement detailing; design for shear; deflection and crack control; slabs and slab systems; ultimate strength of reinforced concrete columns. Prestressed Concrete: concept and construction methods; stresses in simple uncracked members, equivalent loads and load balancing, deflections; prestress losses; ultimate bending strength; introduction to end block design and anchorage. Australian design codes.
Learning Objectives:
- specify the cement type and concrete grade required for specific applications;
- design a basic concrete mix to satisfy strength and durability requirements;
- perform basic quality control tests on fresh or hardened concrete;
- calculate the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete beams, slabs, columns and prestressed concrete beams;
- estimate deflections in simple reinforced and prestressed concrete beams and use span/depth ratios to control deflections;
- understand the advantages of prestressing, and estimate prestress requirements for simple cases;
- read and interpret engineering drawings of concrete structures and check the adequacy of detailing.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
