Engineering 1

39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hour practicals. First semester.

Available to engineering students.

The place of engineering in society – the professional bodies; learned society activities; ethics; registration of engineers. The engineering approach – the design process – technical, economic, environmental, legal and human aspects of design; computer-aided-design. Communication – technical report writing; graphs; drawings; cost estimates; planning. Graphics – projection; orthographic (first and third angle) and pictorial projections; computer-aided-drawing (CAD). Safety – duty of care; legislation; management of workplace (workshop, construction site, office).

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the place of engineering professions in society;
  2. an ability to undertake design tasks;
  3. appreciate the importance of communication in the professions;
  4. the ability to interpret and to make appropriate drawings and sketches.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
