Computer Science Directed Study

Townsville

Prerequisites: Permission of HOS

First and second semester.

Available to Master of Applied Science (Computer Science) students.

An independent course of study and/or research devoted to a topic not covered in the coursework. The subject will be developed in consultation with a member of the staff. Normally, a student taking this subject will carry out a survey of the research literature and/or a small software design and implementation project. A complete account will be presented in a seminar and documented in a report. With the permission of the Head of the School, this subject may be combined with CP5045 to provide research-oriented Master of Applied Science (Computer Science) students with a research project of 12 units.

Learning Objectives:

  1. apply the basic principles and methods of scientific literature searching and/or project development;
  2. produce a report of information gathered during a literature survey or software project;
  3. apply skills gained in the verbal presentation of ideas and technical material via a formal seminar presentation.

Assessment in this subject involves significant on-course assessment including assignments and tests and an examination at the end of the semester. The full details of the assessment are handed out to students in the class in the first week of the semester in which the subject is offered and also posted on the Web.
