Realism in the Cinema

26 hours workshops. First semester.

Available to all students with 3 units of level 1 subjects. This subject, together with other CN subjects and VA1012, can form part of a 3-level strand in cinema studies. The lecturer in this subject should be consulted for further details.

Realism in the cinema as exemplified in Italian cinema beginning with Italian neo-realism and continuing to the present, with particular emphasis on films by Fellini.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to elucidate the idea of realism in the cinema;
  2. to present major works of modern Italian cinema;
  3. to develop an awareness of filmic techniques for transmitting meaning;
  4. to develop skills for analysing realism in films in terms of current writing on realism while paying due attention to filmic techniques.

Assessment by minor weekly assignments (40%); workshop participation (20%); major assignment (40%).
