Prerequisites: Level 3 chemical engineering subjects
39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Second semester.
Available to chemical engineering, industrial chemistry and biotechnology students.
Important industrial fermentation and microbial processes. Fermentation technology; microbial growth and fermentation kinetics; batch and continuous culture; aeration and mass transfer in microbial systems; equipment media and air sterilisation, the industrial use of free and immobilised enzymes and the operation and control of fermentation equipment. Bioprocess economics.
Learning Objectives:
- to introduce students to the industrial applications of biotechnology;
- to provide students with a technical basis suitable for the industrial implementation of a bioprocess;
- to provide students with an appreciation of the economic factors affecting bioprocessing;
- to introduce students to some fundamental bioprocesses used in waste water treatment.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
