Process Analysis

39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Second semester.

Application of the first law of thermodynamics with reaction and heats of reaction, formation, mixing and transition, to the determination of material and energy flows in typical chemical processes. Combined material and energy balances involving equilibrium. Estimation of the physical properties required for material and energy balances. Unsteady state material and energy balances for simple systems. The use of computers for solution of chemical engineering problems. Introduction to specialised packages.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide students with the skills to determine material and energy flows in processes;
  2. to show students how to retrieve and estimate physical properties required for mass and energy balances;
  3. to provide students with the opportunity to generate process flow sheets using specialised computer packages;
  4. to introduce students to the concepts of team work, the communication of technical information and problem solving.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
