Advanced Organic Chemistry

Advanced study of specialist areas of organic chemistry. Currently these include application of advanced nmr techniques to structure determination; pharmacologically active natural products; pericyclic reactions and their applications in synthesis. The laboratory work will generally be associated with a current research interest in organic chemistry within the Department.
Learning Objectives:
- be familiar with the conceptual and methodological frameworks of several current areas of organic chemical research;
- have gained first-hand experience of carrying out a short research project in the environment of a modern chemical research laboratory.
Assessment by problem assignments (50%); performance in the laboratory research project and related report (50%).
