Data Analysis and Information Management

This subject provides an integrated introduction to data analysis and information systems. Students use software programs such as Excel, Access and SPSS to undertake statistics assignments. Basic mathematical and statistical knowledge useful to the general manager are studied. The role and importance of information systems in organisations is explored in depth.
Learning Objectives:
- understanding information requirements within an organisation;
- understanding how Information Systems are planned and constructed;
- collecting, organising and illustrating information from sources external to the organisation;
- understanding information from organisational information systems and electronic commerce;
- understanding the concepts of end-user computing, including descriptive statistics, relational databases, decision support systems, expert support systems and the tasks involved in managing the IS function.
Assessment by individual project (5,000 words) (50%); three-hour examination or 3,000 word essay (50%).
