Conservation and Management of Plant Genetic Resources

Prerequisites: BZ1020 recommended

20 lectures, 10 tutorials, 20 hours practicals. First semester.

Theoretical and applied aspects of the utilisation and management of plant genetic resources. Practical classes will emphasise a ‘hands on’ approach to germplasm conservation, including the collection of plant genetic resources from the North Queensland region.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand the evolution of selected crop plants and the role of genetics in plant improvement;
  2. to appreciate the relative merits of conventional breeding techniques and the newer approaches of biotechnology/genetic engineering;
  3. to understand the basic principles of germplasm collection, evaluation, management and conservation.

Assessment by a three-hour examination(60%); practical research project (15%); on course work (25%).
