Indigenous Perspectives of Anthropology

This subject provides a basic introduction to the discipline of anthropology with emphasis placed on the effects this discipline had on the construction and destruction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people and their identities. Topics include who are the Indigenous people of Australia? the concept of culture; theoretical approach to anthropology; historical overview of anthropology in Australia; critiques of anthropology; the impact of anthropology on Indigenous Australians; Aboriginalism; the construction of Aboriginal identities in Australia.
Learning Objectives:
- an awareness of the main concepts in the discipline of anthropology;
- an ability to critically analyse information and research derived from anthropology;
- an ability to critically analyse information and research from an Indigenous perspective;
- an ability to demonstrate the necessary academic skills required for undertaking a critical analysis;
- an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of Australian Indigenous cultures;
- the ability to strengthen and maintain students identity as Indigenous Australians;
- generate an understanding from a variety of information sources and synthesise the information to produce hypotheses.
Assessment by essay (30%); oral presentation (20%); journal (50%).
