Academic Literacy Development

26 lectures, 26 tutorials. Second semester.

Available to Tertiary Access Course I students.

This subject develops advanced literacy skills which will provide a foundation for more specific academic subjects in the Tertiary Access Courses. It will introduce a wide range of skills, strategies and information for practical application. Emphasis will be placed upon the quality and relevance of process and the learning theory in the context of practice, for example, in the draft preparation of assigned work.

Learning Objectives:

  1. a broad familiarity with the nature of teaching, learning, advanced academic achievement, evaluation and assessment in a tertiary setting;
  2. proficiency in analysing topics, reading, taking notes from, summarising and referencing short academic articles from a range of genre and disciplinary frameworks;
  3. refinement of oral presentation skills;
  4. an understanding of key aspects of cultural contexts in the transmission of knowledge, power and responsibility;
  5. how to critically evaluate and analyse tertiary texts from various discipline areas.

Assessment by portfolio (40%); written assignment (40%); attendance and participation (20%).
