Literacy Development

26 lectures, 26 tutorials. First semester.

Available to Tertiary Access Course I students.

The central purpose of this subject is to prepare students for tertiary literacy and to build literacy competencies with critical frames. It will introduce a wide range of skills, strategies and information for practical application. Emphasis will be placed upon the quality and relevance of process and the learning of theory in the context of practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. examine personal ways of learning, skills, interests, motivation, knowledge and other influences upon academic achievement;
  2. read more effectively for study and inquiry purposes;
  3. enhance knowledge and experience of libraries and other sources of information for teaching, learning and research purposes;
  4. become familiar at an introductory level with computer operations and applications in teaching, learning and study or research;
  5. expand critical thinking, problem-solving and other strategies for academic inquiry, written communication and learning.

Assessment by portfolio (50%); tutorial presentation (30%); attendance and participation (20%).
