Overview of Point of Care Testing: world trends, local usage, future developments.

Instrumentation: range of testing equipment available: modes of operation. Maintenance and servicing. Interfaces to laboratory information systems.

Quality Assurance: sample identification and preparation. Quality control. Medico-legal considerations. External supervision. NATA accreditation.

Results: validation. Registration on central computer system. Interpretation. Expert advice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. an understanding of the concept of point of care testing;
  2. knowledge of the range of testing equipment, operation and maintenance;
  3. ability to validate and interpret results and provide expert advice;
  4. understanding of laboratory information systems.

Assessment by written examination (50%); practical examination (50%).
