Pathology Sample Collection and Transport

Quality Management and Legal Issues: correct identification, confidentiality, informed consent and medico-legal liability. Pre-analytical quality assurance. Universal precautions infection control.
Equipment and Procedures: blood collection including evacuated tubes, needle and syringe, heel and finger pricks. Body fluid and tissue collections including urine, faeces, semen, drainage fluids, skin scrapings, exudates. Neonatal collecting techniques. Special collections to include difficult access to veins, drug monitoring and the reading of drug charts including generic and brand drug names, arterial blood gases, the insertion and monitoring of intravenous cannulae.
Packing and shipping of specimens including hazardous substances and perishables and documentation.
Health Care Settings: hospital bedside, clinics or outpatient departments, culturally aware practice. Communication, including the management of the ‘non-compliant’ customer/client.
Learning Objectives:
- understand medico-legal issues of pathology sample collection;
- understand the importance of universal precautions in pathology sample collection and infection control;
- competently collect and dispatch pathology samples;
- develop a compassionate attitude to patient care and management in a variety of health care settings.
Assessment by a three-hour written examination (50%); practical examination (50%).
