*Principles of Cultural Heritage Management

This subject introduces the key principles, methods and issues in cultural heritage management. It will explore the nature of heritage, current international and national heritage conventions, the mechanisms by which we determine different forms of significance and some of the ethical issues associated. It will also examine the notion of consultation and the impact of heritage studies, the development of conservation and management plans, site interpretation and education, as well as the roles of Federal, State and local government and other agencies. The subject will focus on the application of heritage principles to Australian Aboriginal, historic and maritime sites.
Learning Objectives:
- develop an understanding of the nature of heritage and the mechanisms by which heritage places are identified and defined;
- learn the major criteria and legislative frameworks associated with heritage in Australia;
- evaluate the key ethical issues associated with heritage practice in Australia;
- acquire a knowledge of the workings of conservation and management plans and the interpretation of heritage places;
- develop an understanding of the importance of heritage in modern Australia.
Assessment by tutorial presentation and paper (25%); major essay (25%); three-hour end of semester examination (50%).
