Archaeology of Australia

This subject considers the development, practice and findings of Australian archaeological research. Emphasis will be on a critical review of current archaeological and other scientific studies of prehistoric Aboriginal sites, examining the evidence for the origins and adaptations of the first Australians. The emergence of Australian historical and maritime archaeology and the study of Aboriginal human arrivals and their respective impacts on the Australian environment will be examined.
Learning Objectives:
- acquire knowledge of the development and role of prehistoric, historical and maritime archaeology in Australia;
- understanding of current findings, theoretical perspectives and methodological applications in Australian archaeology;
- acquire knowledge of ethical issues in Australian archaeology;
- develop familiarity with the major debates within the discipline.
Assessment by tutorial presentation and paper (25%); major essay (25%); three-hour end of semester examination (50%).
