The World of Archaeology

This subject provides the first part of an introduction to archaeology. It deals with topics such as the evolution of humans in Africa and elsewhere and the colonisation of Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region. It examines the difference between the archaeology of gatherer-hunters, farming and urban societies. Students are introduced to the diversity of archaeological interests such as environmental, social, maritime and historical archaeology.
Learning Objectives:
- acquire a basic understanding of archaeological concepts and approaches;
- acquire a basic understanding of world archaeology and the importance of Australia and the Pacific in global models of human cultural development;
- acquire a basic understanding of primate and human evolution;
- acquire a basic understanding of archaeology’s varied fields and interdisciplinary links.
Assessment by essay (25%); portfolio (25%); two-hour end of semester examination (50%).
