Aquaculture: Propagation

26 lectures, 21 hours practicals/seminars. First semester.

Reproductive cycles of culture organisms, environmental and internal controlling mechanisms. Broodstock management, selection, conditioning. Spawning induction. Eggs and larvae: quality, nutrition/biochemistry, development. Sex determination, genetic control and differentiation.

This subject shares lectures, tutorials and practical classes with AQ3003.

Learning Objectives:

  1. an understanding of the reproductive cycles of cultured aquatic animals and the factors controlling them;
  2. detailed knowledge of the methods used for broodstock management, spawning induction and larval rearing of culture organisms;
  3. an understanding of current problems and future research directions for aquaculture propagation and stock improvement.

Assessment by practical assignments (including minor project) and examination.
