Aquaculture: Propagation

Reproductive cycles of culture organisms, environmental and internal controlling mechanisms. Broodstock management, selection, conditioning. Spawning induction. Eggs and larvae: quality, nutrition/biochemistry, development. Sex determination, genetic control and differentiation.
This subject shares lectures, tutorials and practical classes with AQ3003.
Learning Objectives:
- an understanding of the reproductive cycles of cultured aquatic animals and the factors controlling them;
- detailed knowledge of the methods used for broodstock management, spawning induction and larval rearing of culture organisms;
- an understanding of current problems and future research directions for aquaculture propagation and stock improvement.
Assessment by practical assignments (including minor project) and examination.
