FACULTY OF ARTS, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCES — POSTGRADUATE AWARD REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL

1.1  Awards

The graduate degrees shall be:

1.2  There shall be awards of:

DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, DIPLOMAS IN ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

1.  Definitions

For the purpose of these Requirements the following definitions apply:

Discipline — a major area of study capable of being identified and of being systematically developed in undergraduate and graduate University courses.

Examiner — a person who marks the examination papers in a subject.

Assesser — an external examiner appointed to mark theses and dissertations.

2.  Entitlement to attend

A student of the University shall be entitled to attend any lecture with the permission of the lecturer.

3.1  Non-degree students

A person who is not proceeding to a degree may enrol for any subject with the approval of the Head of School and on completing the subject shall be entitled to receive an official statement to that effect on application to the Registrar.

3.2  A person who has not qualified for Ordinary or Alternative Entry Admission may enrol for any subject with the approval of the Head of School in the terms of Requirement 3.1, but may enrol for subjects in more than one School only with the approval of the Faculty. Subjects completed by such a student may not be credited towards a degree except by permission of the Faculty.

4.  Saving clause

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in these Requirements, the Faculty may in any case in which it may deem it appropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend any condition of or prescription by these Requirements. Any such action by the Faculty shall be recorded for the purposes of an annual review.

MASTER OF ARTS

1.  The degree of Master of Arts may be undertaken in one or, with Faculty permission, in two of the disciplines or fields of study listed in Schedule A below. The degree shall be awarded in recognition of research or alternatively for satisfactory completion of formal course work with or without research.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged with the Registrar at least one calendar month before the date on which candidature is proposed to commence. All applications shall be considered by the Faculty.

Master of Arts: Evaluation by Research and Thesis

3.  Entitlement to enrol

A person shall be entitled to enrol for the degree of Master of Arts if that person:

3.1  has completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours and has been awarded that degree with Class I or Class II honours either by this University or by another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose; or
3.2  has passed the Master of Arts qualifying course (see requirements for Masters Degree in the Arts — Qualifying Course) or has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to those shown in Requirement 3.1 above ^*; or
3.3  has completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours and has been awarded that degree with Class III honours either by this University or by another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose and if performance in the degree course satisfies the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School or Heads of Schools concerned, that candidature is justified.

4.  A graduate student who has completed one full year’s study towards the degree of Master of Arts: evaluation by course work with or without research, at a standard sufficient to justify candidature for the degree of Master of Arts: evaluation by research and thesis may be admitted to candidature by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School or Heads of Schools concerned, provided that the Faculty is satisfied that adequate research training has been completed by the candidate.

5.  Length of course

Candidates for the degree of Master of Arts by research and thesis, shall normally complete the requirements for the degree in not less than one year nor more than three years if full-time students and in not less than two years nor more than six years if part-time students.

6.  Requirements

A candidate enrolled for the degree shall be required to complete a thesis embodying the results of investigations carried out under supervision. The thesis shall be a unified work showing sound knowledge of the subject matter, independence of thought and capacity to carry out research and it shall be expressed in clear and concise language. The Faculty may also prescribe on advice of the School or Schools concerned, or in the case of interdisciplinary studies of the appropriate committee of studies, that the candidate submit to oral or written examinations appropriate to the subject.

7.  The name of the candidate’s supervisor (and associate supervisor(s) where applicable) and the title of the thesis shall be submitted for approval to the Faculty by the Head of School or Heads of Schools concerned within three months of enrolment by the candidate. The title of the thesis may subsequently be altered with the approval of the Faculty.

8.  No thesis shall be accepted if the substance has been previously accepted for a degree in another institution.

9.  On completion of work the candidate shall lodge with the Registrar three copies of the thesis prepared in accordance with directions given to candidates from time to time.

10.  At the appropriate time for each candidate, the Faculty shall appoint two examiners. One examiner shall be internal and one external to the University, but if no member of the University is suitably qualified for appointment as internal examiner the Head of the appropriate School may nominate a second external examiner. The candidate’s supervisor may be appointed as examiner only in exceptional circumstances. On receipt of the examiners’ reports the Faculty shall recommend:

10.1  that the degree be awarded; or
10.2  that the degree be awarded subject to such minor amendments to the thesis as the examiners may suggest; or
10.3  that the degree be not awarded but that the candidate be allowed to resubmit the thesis or take such further examination as the Faculty shall prescribe; or
10.4  that the degree be not awarded.

11.  The degree of Master of Arts: by research and thesis shall be awarded in the following classes:

Class I
Class II.

12.  Exit status

A graduate awarded the Master of Arts by research and thesis is eligible to apply for PhD candidature.

Master of Arts: Evaluation by Coursework with or without Research

13.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Arts, subject to the particular requirements set out by the Schools in which the course is offered, if that person:

13.1  has completed a three-year Bachelor’s degree with an average grade of Credit or above, or a four-year Bachelor’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree with Class I or Class II Honours either from this University, or another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose; or
13.2  has other qualifications recognised by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned, as equivalent to the conditions of Requirement 13.1 ^*; or
13.3  has completed a Bachelor’s degree with Class III Honours either from this University or another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose and if the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned, is satisfied that candidature is justified.

14.  Length of course

A candidate shall normally complete the requirements for the degree in not fewer than two years and not more than three years in the case of a full-time candidate and in not fewer than four years and not more than six years in the case of a part-time candidate.

15.  Requirements

To qualify for the degree a candidate shall satisfactorily complete 48 units of designated subjects consisting of Part A (first-year) and Part B (second-year). Part B shall consist of a dissertation worth 12 units and coursework worth 12 units, or coursework worth 24 units.

16.  The dissertation shall embody the results of investigations carried out under supervision. The dissertation shall be a unified work showing sound knowledge of the subject matter, independence of thought and capacity to carry out research and it shall be expressed in clear and concise language.

17.  The name of the candidate’s supervisor (and associate supervisor where applicable) and the title of the dissertation shall be submitted for approval to the Faculty by the Head(s) of School(s) concerned within two months of completion of Part A of the course.

18.  No dissertation shall be accepted if the substance has been previously accepted for another degree.

19.  On completion of work the candidate shall lodge with the Registrar three copies of the dissertation prepared in accordance with directions given to candidates.

20.  A candidate who satisfactorily completes Part A, but who is unable to undertake Part B of the course, may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Arts on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned.

21.  The personal course of study of every Material Anthropology student shall include eight weeks of placement in order to gain direct experience of the profession. Such placement shall normally be undertaken in two parts, one in first year and one in second year vacations.These placements shall be in museums or similar institutions approved by the Head of the School of Anthropology and Archaeology. The second placement may, with the approval of the Head of School, be undertaken in the field under supervision.

22.  If the Executive Dean and the Head of School are satisfied that the candidate has had suitable practical experience for a period of not less than six months, the Executive Dean may exempt the candidate from part or all of the placement necessitated by this Requirement.

23.  The candidate shall submit to the Head of School a report on each placement.

24.  Credit for other studies

Credit may be granted for appropriate work in the discipline prior to enrolment in the degree, but in no circumstances may credit be granted for subjects equivalent to more than the whole of Part A of the course.

25.  Supervisors

The Faculty shall appoint a supervisor who shall be an appropriately qualified member of the University staff.

26.  Assessment

The method of assessment for the degree shall be determined by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned. The dissertation shall be assessed by two examiners.

27.  To qualify for the degree a candidate shall have completed the degree course, including any written or oral examinations prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

28.  Exit status

A graduate awarded the Master of Arts by coursework with research normally must obtain a grade of at least Distinction in the dissertation component of the degree in order to be eligible to apply for PhD candidature at James Cook University.

29.  A graduate awarded the Master of Arts by coursework without research is not eligible to apply for PhD candidature on the basis of this degree alone.

Schedule A

MASTERS DEGREES IN ARTS — QUALIFYING COURSE

1.  Requirements for candidature

A person shall be permitted to enrol for a qualifying course for a Masters degree within Arts if that person:

1.1  has successfully completed the course for an appropriate bachelor degree awarded either by this University or by another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose; or
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to the conditions of Requirement 1.1; and
1.3  the Faculty is satisfied that entry to the candidate’s proposed Masters degree program by way of an honours degree course is inappropriate.

2.  Course of studies

A person enrolling in the Masters qualifying course shall pursue studies in the selected field under the direction of the appropriate Head of School. Details of the course of study, including its duration and the means of assessment, shall be approved by the Faculty at the time of enrolment. The Faculty will require that, on completion of the course of study, the candidate will be equipped to undertake a research degree in the selected field.

3.  Except with Faculty permission, a candidate shall not be permitted to attempt more than once any of the studies prescribed under 2 above, but may be permitted by the examiners to resubmit any thesis or similar prescribed written work included in the course.

4.  Evaluation of the candidate’s achievement in the course of study will be determined by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School, as pass or fail.

MASTER OF CULTURAL HERITAGE STUDIES

Master of Cultural Heritage Studies: Evaluation by Coursework with Research

1.  Entitlement

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Cultural Heritage Studies by coursework with research, if that person:

1.1  has been awarded by this University or by another institution of higher learning recognised by the Faculty for this purpose a Bachelor degree with Class I or Class II Honours in Archaeology or Anthropology;
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1, or otherwise satisfies the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School that candidature is justified.

2.  Length of degree course

The requirements for the degree shall be completed by a full-time candidate in not less than eighteen months and normally not more than three years, and by a part-time candidate in not less than four years and normally in not more than six years.

2.1  The Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School, may require a candidate to undertake bridging or supplementary subjects prior to or concurrently with the course of study. This will apply particularly to candidates admitted under Requirement 1.2 above.

3.  Requirements for completion of degree

The course of study shall normally consist of the four subjects listed in Schedule A, Parts I and II and the thesis listed in Schedule A, Part IV. The Schedule is shown under Postgraduate Courses.

3.1  An alternative course of study, which shall include both subjects listed in Schedule A, Part I, additional subjects to a value of 12 units chosen from Schedule A, Parts II and III and the thesis listed in Schedule A, Part IV, may be approved by the Executive Dean on the advice of the Head of School.

4.  The thesis shall embody the results of investigations carried out under supervision. The thesis shall be a unified work showing sound knowledge of the subject matter, independence of thought and a capacity to carry out research. It shall be expressed in clear and concise English and conform to the standards of thesis production required by the School.

5.  The name of the candidate’s supervisor (and associate supervisor where applicable) and the subject of the thesis shall be submitted for approval to the Faculty by the Head of School, within two months of commencement of the thesis.

6.  No thesis shall be accepted if the substance has been previously accepted for another degree.

7.  On completion of work the candidate shall lodge with the Faculty Office three copies of the thesis prepared in accordance with directions given to candidates.

8.  At the appropriate time for each candidate, the Faculty shall appoint two examiners. One examiner shall be internal and one external to the School, but if no member of the School is suitably qualified for appointment as internal examiner the Head of School may nominate a second external examiner. The candidate’s supervisor may be appointed as examiner only in exceptional circumstances.

9.  A candidate who satisfactorily completes 24 credit units, but who is unable to complete the course, may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies on the recommendation of the Head of School.

10.  Credit

Credit may be awarded for relevant previous postgraduate studies up to the equivalent of 12 units. If a candidate holds a Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies credit of 24 units shall be awarded.

11.  Assessment

The method of assessment for the degree shall be determined by the Faculty on the recommendation of the Head of School.

11.1  To qualify for the degree a candidate shall have completed the degree course, including all work prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.
11.2  The degree of Master of Cultural Heritage Studies shall be awarded in the following classes:

Class I
Class II.

MASTER OF PSYCHOLOGY

1.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may enrol for the degree of Master of Psychology if that person

1.1  has a first or second class honours degree from a course accredited by the Australian Psychological Society; or
1.2  has a four year degree or a graduate diploma from a course accredited by the Australian Psychological Society, achieved at a level which is thought by the Head of School to be at least equivalent to a second class honours degree; or
1.3  has passed an Australian Psychological Society accredited masters qualifying program in Psychology; or
1.4  has, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, adequate experience and/or training and academic competence to succeed in the course; and
1.5  satisfies the Selection Committee as to his or her personal suitability for a professional career in clinical or health psychology.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged with the Registrar and will be considered by a Selection Committee comprising the Head of the School of Psychology and Sociology, the Course Co-ordinator and one other member of the Psychology staff.

3.  Length of course

A full-time student will complete the course in no fewer than two and no more than three years and for a part-time student the time limitation will be no fewer than three and no more than five years.

4.  Requirements for completion of degree

To qualify for the degree of Master of Psychology, a candidate shall satisfactorily complete 48 credit units consisting of:

1. 27 units of designated coursework;
2. 12 units from three supervised practicums;
3. 9 units by research dissertation.

4.1  A grade of Pass or better must be obtained in all parts of the course and candidates may be excluded from continuing if they are awarded less than a Pass grade on two occasions during their course of study.
4.2  The dissertation shall be examined by at least two examiners, one of whom should be external to the University.
4.3  The assessment of performance during a practicum will be based on reports completed by the main supervisor for the placement.

5.  Supervision

All practicum and research work will be supervised by at least one University supervisor and candidates shall attend the University for consultation with the supervisor as required.

5.1  Practicums will be supervised by a University supervisor as well as a supervisor employed by the placement facility.

6.  Assessment

A candidate who has fulfilled the requirements for the degree as specified in items 4 to 4.3 above, within the time limits defined in 3 and has met and complied with other applicable requirements and standards, will be awarded the degree Master of Psychology.

MASTER OF SOCIAL POLICY

1.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Social Policy if that person:

1.1  has completed an appropriate three or four year degree; or
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged at any time prior to the commencement of either semester. All applications shall be considered by the Faculty.

3.  Length of course

Unless granted credit in accordance with Requirement 5, the normal period of candidature shall be three semesters of full-time or three years of part-time study.

4.  Requirements for completion of degree

A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Policy shall complete at least one subject from Part A and any five subjects to the value of 30 units from Parts A, B and C with no more than two subjects from Part C in the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses.

5.  A candidate may be granted advanced status. The conditions for granting advanced status will be determined by the Faculty but credit granted may not exceed 12 units. A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Policy may be credited with WS5004:06 (Social Welfare Research Methods) of Part B of the Schedule on the basis of equivalent honours level studies undertaken for the prerequisitie degree. Candidates, with at least two years fulltime professional experience, or the equivalent, in a social welfare agency at the time of enrolment, may be granted credit of 12 units of study from Parts B and/or C of the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses.

6.  To qualify for either degree of Master of Social Policy a candidate shall have completed the degree course, including any written or oral examination prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

MASTER OF SOCIAL POLICY WITH HONOURS

1.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Social Policy with Honours if that person has:

1.1  a Class I or Class II Honours degree; or
1.2  completed an appropriate three or four year degree with an overall average grade of at least Credit and including the grade of Distinction in at least two of the second or third year subjects in that degree; or
1.3  qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1 and 1.2.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged at any time prior to the commencement of either semester. All applications shall be considered by the Faculty.

3.1  Length of course

Unless granted credit in accordance with Requirement 3.2, the normal period of candidature shall be three semesters of full-time or three years of part-time study.

3.2  A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Policy with Honours may be credited with WS5004 of Part A of the Schedule on the basis of any honours-level research studies undertaken.

4.  Requirements for completion of degree

For the degree of Master of Social Policy with Honours, a candidate shall be required:

4.1   to complete the subjects from Part A and at least one subject from Part B of the Schedule. WS5004 must be completed with a grade of at least Credit before a student can begin the thesis. Students failing to attain the grade of Credit in WS5004 may not continue the Master of Social Policy (Honours);
4.2  to undertake a Confirmation Seminar within six months of starting the thesis for full-time students and within twelve months for part-time students;
4.3  to submit three copies of the thesis or portfolio in the form prescribed by the Faculty;
4.4  to complete the degree course, including any written or oral examinations prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

5.1  Examination of the thesis

The examination of the thesis, whether thesis or by portfolio, shall be undertaken by two examiners approved by the Executive Dean on the recommendation of the Head of School. At least one examiner shall be external to the University. The examiners shall report their assessments in writing to the Registrar, who shall forward such reports to the Head of School, for transmission to the Executive Dean.

5.2  The Executive Dean, on considering the examiners’ reports and the advice of the Head of School shall recommend to the Faculty either the award of an appropriate grade, or a grade to be awarded upon completion to the satisfaction of the Head of School of any revisions, minor amendments or corrections.

6.  Supervisors

The Faculty shall appoint a supervisor who shall be an appropriately qualified member of the University staff.

7.1  Assessment

The degree of Master of Social Policy with Honours shall be awarded in the following classes:

Class I
Class IIA
Class IIB.

7.2  A Class I Masters degree will be awarded to a student who gains either a High Distinction for their thesis or a GPA across all subjects in the Masters degree of at least 75%.

MASTER OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

1.  The degree of Master of Social Science: Evaluation by Research and Thesis may be undertaken in one or, with Faculty permission, in two of the disciplines or fields of study listed in Schedule A below. The degree of Master of Social Science: Evaluation by coursework with or without research may be undertaken in the disciplines listed in Schedule B below. The degree shall be awarded in recognition of research or alternatively for satisfactory completion of formal course work with or without research.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged with the Faculty Office at least one calendar month before the date on which candidature is proposed to commence. All applications shall be considered by the Faculty.

Master of Social Science: Evaluation by Research and Thesis

3.  Entitlement to enrol

A person shall be entitled to enrol for the degree of Master of Social Science if that person:

3.1  has completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Social Science with Honours and has been awarded that degree with Class I or Class II honours either by this University or by another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose; or has passed the Master of Social Science qualifying course (see requirements for Masters Degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences-Qualifying Course) or has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 3.1 above^*; or otherwise satisfies the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School or Heads of Schools concerned, that candidature is justified.

4.  A graduate student who has completed one full year’s study towards the degree of Master of Social Science: evaluation by coursework with or without research, at a standard sufficient to justify candidature for the degree of Master of Social Science: evaluation by research and thesis may be admitted to candidature by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School or Heads of Schools concerned, provided that the Faculty is satisfied that adequate research training has been completed by the candidate.

Master of Social Science: Evaluation by Coursework With or Without Research

12.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Social Science, subject to the particular requirements set out by the Schools in which the course is offered, if that person:

12.1  has completed a three-year Bachelor’s degree with an average grade of Credit or above, or a four-year Bachelor’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree with Class I or Class 11 Honours either from this University, or another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose; or
12.2  has other qualifications recognised by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned, as equivalent to Requirement 12.1^*; or
12.3  if the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned, is satisfied that candidature is justified.

13.  Length of course

A candidate shall normally complete the requirements for the degree in not less than eighteen months and not more than three years in the case of a full-time candidate and in not less than four years and not more than six years in the case of a part-time candidate.

14.  Requirements

To qualify for the degree a candidate shall satisfactorily complete 36 or 48 credit units of designated subjects depending on the candidate’s previous training and as recommended by the Head(s) of School(s) concerned. Where the course of study includes a dissertation, that dissertation shall be worth a maximum of 12 units.

15.  The dissertation shall embody the results of investigations carried out under supervision. The dissertation shall be a unified work showing sound knowledge of the subject matter, independence of thought and capacity to carry out research and it shall be expressed in clear and concise language.

16.  The name of the candidate’s supervisor (and associate supervisor where applicable) and the subject of the dissertation shall be submitted for approval to the Faculty by the Head(s) of School(s) concerned, within two months of commencement of the dissertation.

17.  No dissertation shall be accepted if the substance has been previously accepted for another degree.

18.  On completion of work the candidate shall lodge with the Faculty Office three copies of the dissertation prepared in accordance with directions given to candidates.

19.  A candidate who satisfactorily completes 24 credit units, but who is unable to complete the course, may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Social Science on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned.

20.  Credit for other studies

Credit may be granted for appropriate work in the discipline prior to enrolment in the degree, but in no circumstances may credit be granted for subjects equivalent to more than 18 units of the course.

21.  Supervisors

The Faculty shall appoint a supervisor who shall be an appropriately qualified member of the University staff.

22.  Assessment

The method of assessment for the degree shall be determined by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned. The dissertation shall be assessed by two examiners.

23.  To qualify for the degree a candidate shall have completed the degree course, including any written or oral examinations prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

Masters Degrees in the Faculty of Social Sciences – Qualifying Course

1.  Requirements for candidature

A person shall be permitted to enrol for a qualifying course for a Masters degree within the Faculty of Social Sciences if that person:

1.1  has successfully completed the course for an appropriate bachelor degree awarded either by this University or by another university recognised by the Faculty for this purpose, or
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1; and
1.3  the Faculty is satisfied that entry to the candidate’s proposed Masters degree program by way of an honours degree course is inappropriate.

2.  Course of studies

A person enrolling in the Masters qualifying course shall pursue studies in the selected field under the direction of the appropriate Head of School. Details of the course of study, including its duration and the means of assessment, shall be approved by the Faculty at the time of enrolment. The Faculty will require that, on completion of the course of study, the candidate will be equipped to undertake a research degree in the selected field.

3.  Except with Faculty permission, a candidate shall not be permitted to attempt more than once any of the studies prescribed under 2. above, but may be permitted by the examiners to resubmit any thesis or similar prescribed written work included in the course.

4.  Evaluation of the candidate’s achievement in the course of study will be determined by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School, as pass or fail.

MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK

1.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Social Work if that person has:

1.1  completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work or the degree of Bachelor of Social Work with Honours awarded by this University or by another university or institution of higher education recognised by the Faculty; or
1.2  qualifications and experience recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged at any time prior to the commencement of either semester. All applications shall be considered by the Faculty.

3.  Length of course

Unless granted credit in accordance with Requirement 5 the normal period of candidature shall be eighteen months of full-time or three years of part-time study.

4.  Requirements for completion of degree

A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Work shall complete the subject from Part A and any five subjects to the value of 30 units from Parts B and C with no more than two subjects from Part C in the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses.

5.  A candidate may be granted advanced status. The conditions for granting advanced status will be determined by the Faculty but credit granted may not exceed 12 units. A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Work may be credited with WS5004:06 (Social Welfare Research Methods) of Part B of the schedule on the basis of equivalent honours level studies undertaken for the prerequisite degree. Candidates, with at least two years full-time professional experience, or the equivalent, in social work at the time of enrolment, may be granted credit of 12 units of study from Parts B and/or C of the Schedule.

6.  To qualify for the degree of Master of Social Work a candidate shall have completed the degree course, including any written or oral examinations prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK WITH HONOURS

1.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may apply to enrol for the degree of Master of Social Work with Honours if that person has:

1.1  completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work with Class I or Class II Honours awarded by this University or by another university or institution of higher education recognised by the Faculty; or
1.2  completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work awarded by this University or by another university or institution of higher education recognised by the Faculty provided that the degree has an overall average grade of at least Credit and includes the grade of Distinction in at least two of the subjects in the third and fourth years of the degree; or
1.3  qualifications and experience recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirements 1.1 and 1.2.

2.  Time for enrolment

An application to enrol for the degree shall be lodged at any time prior to the commencement of either semester. All applications shall be considered by the Faculty.

3.1  Length of degree course

Unless granted credit in accordance with Requirement 3.2, the normal period of candidature shall be eighteen months of full-time or three years of part-time study.

3.2  A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Work with Honours may be exempted from WS5004 on the basis of any honours-level research studies undertaken for their prerequisite degree.

4.  Requirements for completion of degree

A candidate enrolled for the degree of Master of Social Work with Honours shall be required:

4.1  to complete the subjects from the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses. WS5004 must be completed with a grade of at least Credit before a student can begin the thesis. Students failing to attain the grade of Credit in WS5004 may not continue the Master of Social Work (Honours);
4.2  to undertake a Confirmation Seminar within six months of starting the thesis for full-time students and within twelve months for part-time students;
4.3  to submit three copies of the thesis or portfolio in the form prescribed by the Faculty;
4.4  to have completed the degree course, including any written or oral examinations prescribed, to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

5.1  Examination of the thesis

The examination of the thesis, whether by thesis or by portfolio, shall be undertaken by two examiners approved the the Executive Dean on the recommendation of the Head of School. At least one examiner shall be external to the Unvirsity. The examiners shall report their assessments in writing to the Registrar, who shall forward such reports to the Head of School, for transmission to the Executive Dean.

5.2  The Executive Dean, on considering the examiners’ reports and the advice of the Head of School, shall recommend to the Faculty either the award of an appropriate grade, or a grade to be awarded upon completion to the satisfaction of the Head of School of any revisions, minor amendments or corrections.

6.  Supervisors

The Faculty shall appoint a supervisor who shall be an appropriately qualified member of the University staff.

7.1  Assessment

The degree Master of Social Work with Honours shall be awarded in the following classes:

Class I
Class IIA
Class IIB.

7.2  A Class I Masters degree will be awarded to a student who gains either a High Distinction for their thesis or a GPA across all subjects in the Masters degree of at least 75%.

MASTER OF WOMEN’S STUDIES

1.  Entitlement to enrol

An applicant for the Master of Women’s Studies:

1.1  shall have qualified in this or another University for a Bachelor or Bachelor with Honours degree or its equivalent; or
1.2  shall have qualified in this University for a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma of Women’s Studies; or
1.3  shall have qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirements 1.1 and 1.2.

2.1  Length of course

The minimum period of candidature shall be three semesters for a full-time candidate or three years for a part-time candidate.

2.2  The normal maximum period of candidature shall be three years for a full-time candidate or six years for a part-time candidate, provided that in special circumstances the Faculty may grant an extension of candidature.

3.1  Credit for other studies

Credit may be given by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies, for subjects already credited toward another tertiary qualification, either of the University or a similar institution. Such credit shall not exceed 24 units.

3.2  Where credit is granted in respect of the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma of Women’s Studies, such award should be surrendered prior to the award of the Master of Women’s Studies.

4.  Method of assessment

The examination of subjects shall be by such assignments as are prescribed in the subjects selected from Schedule A shown under Postgraduate Courses.

5.  Requirements for completion of Master of Women’s Studies

To qualify for the Master of Women’s Studies degree, a candidate shall successfully complete 36 credit units, including Part A and Part B of Schedule A shown under Postgraduate Courses.

6.  Award of Degree

Upon completion of the conditions listed under Requirement 5, candidates shall be awarded the Master of Women’s Studies degree.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE OF JOURNALISM

Requirements for candidature

1. The Certificate comprises a mimimum of 12 units, including a core of at least six units from the subjects listed in Schedule A, and the remainder from the subjects listed in Schedule B. (Schedules shown under Postgraduate Courses.) The Certificate will normally be completed in one year of part-time study. This pattern may be varied with the permission of the Head of School. Applicants with appropriate industry experience may be granted credit for one level 1 three-unit Journalism subject.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

1.  Requirements for candidature

A person may enrol for the Graduate Certificate of Social Science if that person:

1.1  holds or has completed the requirements for an appropriate Bachelor degree either from this University or from another institution of higher learning, provided that the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of School is satisfied that the previous studies are of adequate standard and relevant to the course proposed; or
1.2  has other qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1; or
1.3  has other qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be appropriate for entry to the course.

2.  Period of Candidature

The normal period of candidature shall be one semester of full-time study or one year of part-time study.

3.  Course of studies

A candidate shall select one of the fields or disciplines listed in Schedule A below and shall successfully complete a course of study approved by the Faculty comprising 12 credit units at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.

4.  Method of assessment

The Graduate Certificate of Social Science shall be awarded in the following classes:

1.1  has qualified in this or another University for a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology provided that the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head of the School, is satisfied that the standard and the subjects of the previous studies are adequate;
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as:

1. either equivalent to Requirement 1.1; or
2. has alternative qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be appropriate for entry to the course.

2.1  Period of candidature

The minimum period of candidature shall normally be one semester for a full-time candidate or one year for a part–time candidate.

2.2  The maximum period of candidature shall normally be one year for a full-time candidate or two years for a part-time candidate, provided that in special circumstances the Faculty may grant an extension of candidature.

Appropriate subjects taught outside the Faculty may be incorporated into a Graduate Diploma of Arts.

A person may enrol for the Graduate Diploma of Arts course if that person:

1.1  holds or has completed the requirements for a Bachelor degree, either from this University or from another institution of higher education, provided that the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of School(s) concerned, is satisfied that the previous studies are of adequate standard and relevant to the course proposed; or

GRADUATE DIPLOMA OF PSYCHOLOGY

1.  Requirements for candidature

A person may enrol for the Graduate Diploma of Psychology course if that person:

1.1  holds or has completed the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Social Science or Arts and studies have included levels 1, 2 and 3 subjects prescribed for the degree of Bachelor of Social Science or Arts with Honours with specialisation in Psychology; or
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1.

2.  Period of candidature

The normal period of candidature shall be one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

3.  Course of studies

A candidate shall follow the course of study prescribed in Schedule A shown under Postgraduate Courses.

4.  Candidates may be required to undertake such tests and interviews as are considered necessary to assess their suitability to work in the helping professions.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

The Graduate Diploma of Social Science is designed for graduates who wish to pursue further studies within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, either in a single discipline, or in multiple disciplines, or in a selected interdisciplinary area of study. Appropriate subjects taught outside the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences may be incorporated into a Graduate Diploma of Social Science.

A candidate who has been awarded the Postgraduate Certificate of Cultural Heritage Studies will be awarded 12 units credit towards the Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies on the recommendation of the Head of School.

5.  Method of assessment

The assessment of subjects shall be by such assignments, reports, presentations and examinations as prescribed in the course of study.

6.  Award of diploma

Upon completion of Requirement 3, candidates may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies.

7.  The Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies shall be awarded in the following classes:

Distinction
Pass.

8.  Candidates wishing to use the credit points obtained within the Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies as credit towards the Master of Cultural Heritage Studies (evaluation by coursework with research) shall surrender the Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies before the higher qualification is awarded.

9.  A candidate who satisfactorily completes the conditions of the Postgraduate Certificate of Cultural Heritage Studies but is unable to complete the conditions of the Postgraduate Diploma of Cultural Heritage Studies shall be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate of Cultural Heritage Studies.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

1.  Requirements for candidature

A person may enrol for the Postgraduate Diploma of Social Science if, in the field or discipline in which the diploma is sought, that person:

1.1  has qualified in this or another university for a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline provided that the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Head(s) of the School(s) concerned, is satisfied that the standard and the subjects of the previous studies are adequate;
1.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as

1. either equivalent to Requirement 1.1; or
2. has alternative qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be appropriate for entry to the course.

2.  Period of candidature

The normal period of candidature shall be one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

3.  Course of studies

A candidate shall select one of the fields or disciplines listed in Schedule A below and follow the course of study prescribed, comprising 24 units of designated subjects at postgraduate level.

4.  Assessment

Assessment procedures may include any or all of the following: assignments and papers, a research project and report and examinations.

5.  Except with the approval of Faculty, there shall be no re-examination.

6.  The Postgraduate Diploma of Social Science shall be awarded in the following classes:

Schedule A

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA OF SOCIAL WELFARE

1.  Entitlement to enrol

A person may enrol for the Postgraduate Diploma of Social Welfare if that person:

1.1  has completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work or the degree of Bachelor of Social Work with Honours awarded by this University or by another university or institution of higher education recognised by the Faculty for this purpose; or
1.2  has completed the course for the degree of Bachelor of Community Welfare with Honours awarded by this University; or
1.3  has completed the Bachelor of Community Welfare or an appropriate three year degree; or
1.4  has qualifications and experience recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirements 1.1 or 1.2 or 1.3.

2.  Period of Candidature

The normal period of candidature shall be two years of part-time study or one year of full-time study.

3.1  Requirements for completion of degree

The course of study shall consist of at least one subject from Part A of Schedule A and any three other subjects from Part B of Schedule A shown under Postgraduate Courses.

3.2  A candidate may be exempted from one subject from Part A or Part B on the basis of any honours-level studies undertaken for the requisite degree.

4.  Supervisors

The Faculty shall appoint a supervisor who shall be an appropriately qualified member of the University staff.

5.  Assessment

To qualify for the diploma a candidate shall have completed the course, including any written or oral examinations prescribed to the satisfaction of the Faculty.

6.  The Graduate Diploma of Social Welfare shall be awarded in the following classes:

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA OF WOMEN’S STUDIES

1.  Requirements for candidature

An applicant for the Postgraduate Diploma of Women’s Studies:

1.1  shall have qualified in this or another University for a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; or
1.2  shall have other qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1.

2.1  Period of candidature

The minimum period of candidature shall be one year for a full-time candidate or two years for a part-time candidate.

2.2  The normal maximum period of candidature shall be two years for a full-time candidate or four years for a part-time candidate, provided that in special circumstances the Faculty may grant an extension of candidature.

3.  Credit for other studies

Credit may be given by the Faculty, on the recommendation of the Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies, for subjects already credited toward another tertiary qualification, either of the University or a similar institution. Such credit shall not exceed 12 units.

4.  Course of studies

A candidate shall successfully complete a course of study approved by the Executive Dean comprising 24 credit units selected from both subjects listed in Part A of the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses and two subjects listed in Part B of the Schedule.

5.  Method of assessment

The examination of subjects shall be by such assignments as prescribed by the subjects selected from the Schedule.

6.1  Award of diploma

Upon completion of Requirement 4, candidates shall be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma of Women’s Studies.

6.2  Candidates wishing to use the credit units obtained within the Postgraduate Diploma of Women’s Studies as credit toward the Master of Women’s Studies, shall surrender the Postgraduate Diploma of Women’s Studies before the higher qualification is awarded.

CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES IN EDUCATION

POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION

This award does not lead to registration as a teacher.

1.  Requirements for candidature

An applicant for the Postgraduate Certificate of Education:

1.1   shall have qualified in this University for the degree of Bachelor of Education; or
1.2  shall hold, from this or another tertiary institution, a degree and have successfully completed a course of teacher education approved by the Faculty^*

2.  An applicant who does not meet the conditions of Requirement 1:

2.1  shall have qualified in this University or another tertiary institution for a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; and
2.2  may with the permission of the Faculty, in consultation with the Head of School of Education, be admitted only to postgraduate subjects for which the applicant has the requisite training and skills.

3.  Candidature in exceptional circumstances

In exceptional cases, applicants may be permitted to enrol if they submit other evidence of academic and professional attainments and their candidature is approved by the Faculty.

4.  Notwithstanding any other provisions of these Requirements, the Faculty may require an applicant to demonstrate fitness for enrolment by carrying out such work and completing satisfactorily such examinations as the Faculty may determine, on the advice of the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies) in consultation with the appropriate Head of School.

5.  Enrolment status

A candidate shall be designated by the Faculty as a full-time candidate or a part-time candidate.

6.  A candidate may be granted advanced status. The conditions for granting such advanced status will be determined by the Faculty but in no case will the credit granted exceed four units.

7.  Period of candidature

The minimum period of candidature shall be one semester for a full-time candidate and one year for a part-time candidate.

8.  The maximum period of candidature shall be one year for a full-time candidate and two years for a part-time candidate, provided that in special circumstances the Faculty may grant an extension of the period or approve a suspension of candidature of no more than one semester.

9.  Course of studies

A candidate shall successfully complete a course of study approved by the Faculty comprising twelve units by selecting from the subjects available.

10.  Method of assessment

The examination of subjects shall be by such assignments, exercises and written papers as may be prescribed.

11.  Award of the certificate

Upon completion at the level prescribed by the Faculty of the appropriate requirements and upon complying with all other relevant Statutes and Requirements, candidates may be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate of Education.

12.  Candidates wishing to use the units obtained within the Postgraduate Certificate of Education as credit towards the Master of Education shall surrender the Postgraduate Certificate before the higher qualification is awarded.

13.  The Postgraduate Certificate of Education offers the flexibility to be read as either a specialist or a general certificate in coursework mode. While specialist programs require the completion of designated subjects, candidates for the general program may construct a course that suits their own purposes from the subjects available.

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education consists of a twelve unit program of study (three subjects).

MASTER OF EDUCATION

1.  Requirements for candidature

An applicant for enrolment for the degree of Master of Education:

1.1  shall have qualified in this University for the degree of Bachelor of Education; or
1.2  shall hold, from this or another tertiary institution, a degree and have successfully completed a course of teacher education approved by the Faculty.

2.  An applicant for enrolment for the degree of Master of Education who does not meet the requirements of 1.1 and 1.2:

2.1  shall have qualified in this University or another tertiary institution for a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; and
2.2  may, with the permission of the Faculty, in consultation with the Head of School of Education, be admitted only to postgraduate subjects for which the applicant has the requisite training and skills.

3.  Candidature in exceptional circumstances

In exceptional cases applicants may be permitted to enrol if they submit other evidence of academic and professional attainments and their candidature is approved by the Faculty.

4.  Notwithstanding any other provisions of these Requirements, the Faculty may require an applicant to demonstrate fitness for enrolment by carrying out such work and sitting for such examinations as the Faculty may determine, on the advice of the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies) in consultation with the appropriate Head of School.

5.  Supervision

In every case the Executive Dean, through the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies) on the advice of the appropriate Head of School, shall be satisfied that adequate supervision and facilities are available before permitting an applicant to enrol in a dissertation.

6.  Enrolment status

A candidate shall be designated by the Faculty as a full-time candidate or a part-time candidate.

7.  A candidate may be granted advanced status. The conditions for granting of such advanced status will be determined by the Faculty but in no case will the credit granted for professional experience exceed twelve units. A candidate who enrols in the Master of Education for the first time in 2000 or subsequently, and who accrues two years of full-time (or equivalent) professional experience acceptable to the Faculty^* before completing the requirements of the degree, may be granted credit of 12 units. A further 12 units of credit may be granted for previous studies completed at Masters level. The maximum credit permitted is 24 units. Such credit shall not, however, apply to core subjects specified in the designated programs within the Master of Education course. Candidates enrolled before 2000 should consult the Faculty regarding requirements for completion of their award.

8.  Period of candidature

The minimum period of candidature shall be eighteen months for a full-time candidate and three years for a part-time candidate.

9.  The maximum period of candidature shall be three years for a full-time candidate and six years for a part-time candidate, provided that in special circumstances the Faculty may grant an extension of the period or approve a suspension of candidature of no more than twelve months.

10.  Course of studies

A candidate shall successfully complete a course of study approved by the Faculty comprising thirty-six units in accordance with one of the patterns of study designated in the Programs listed below. A candidate with advanced status shall successfully complete a course of study approved by the Faculty comprising at least twenty-four units in accordance with one of the patterns of study designated in the Programs below. Candidates may include an eight-unit dissertation as part of this course of studies, or they may complete the course of studies by subjects only.

Before a dissertation can be submitted for examination the candidate must have received approval from the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies), as advised by the Head of School, of a written proposal which outlines the topic and proposed plan of work.

Advice on writing the proposal and the thesis, dissertation or project is provided.

11.  Method of assessment

The examination of subjects shall be by such assignments, exercises and written papers as may be prescribed.

12.  If a dissertation is included as part of a candidate’s course of studies, three copies of the dissertation shall be submitted in the form prescribed by the guidelines provided by the School of Education.

13.  The examination of a dissertation shall be undertaken by two examiners approved by the Head of School.

14.  Award of the degree

Upon completion at the level prescribed by the Faculty of Requirements 11 and 12 and upon complying with all other relevant Statutes and Requirements, candidates may be awarded the degree of Master of Education.

Candidates who complete an identified program (as listed below) will have that program indicated on their academic record.

15.  The Master of Education degree offers the flexibility to be read as either a specialist or a general degree in either coursework and dissertation, or fully coursework mode. While specialist programs require the completion of designated subjects, candidates for the general degree may construct a course that suits their own purposes from the subjects available.

The Master of Education degree consists of a thirty-six unit program or, with advanced status, a minimum of a twenty-four unit program of study. Candidates may complete the degree by subjects only, or by subjects and an eight unit dissertation. Candidates who enrol in the dissertation are expected to select subjects for study that would support their proposed dissertation. Assistance in identifying a supervisor for each candidate is provided by the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies). Advice on preparing and submitting a dissertation is provided.

To complete requirements for a program, students must successfully complete thirty-six units or, with advanced status, a minimum of twenty-four units, including the subjects designated for that program. An eight unit dissertation may be included in all programs.

MASTER OF EDUCATION WITH HONOURS

1.  Requirements for candidature

An applicant for enrolment for the degree of Master of Education with Honours:

1.1  shall have qualified in this University for the degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours; or
1.2  shall hold, from this or another University a first or second class honours degree in a relevant discipline; or
1.3  shall hold a degree in a relevant discipline and have demonstrated appropriate experience of educational research.

2.  An applicant for the degree of Master of Education with Honours who does not meet Requirements 1.1 to 1.3:

2.1  shall have qualified in this University or another tertiary institution for a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; and
2.2  shall have completed at least 8 units (or equivalent) of postgraduate coursework, at credit level or better, which includes at least 4 units (or equivalent) of research preparation.

3.  Candidature in exceptional circumstances

In exceptional cases applicants may be permitted to enrol if they submit other evidence of academic and professional attainments and their candidature is approved by the Faculty.

4.  Notwithstanding any other provisions of these Requirements, the Faculty may require an applicant to demonstrate fitness for enrolment by carrying out such work and sitting for such examinations as the Faculty may determine, on the advice of the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies) in consultation with the Head of School.

10.  Course of studies

A candidate shall successfully complete a Masters thesis approved by the Faculty and such other studies as the Faculty may require.

Before a thesis can be submitted for examination the candidate must have received approval from the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies), as advised by the Head of School, of a written proposal which outlines the topic and proposed plan of work.

(Advice on writing and submitting the proposal and the thesis is provided.)

11.  Annually during a candidate’s progress through the thesis each candidate shall, through the staff member acting as supervisor, be required to submit a written report to Faculty of not more than two hundred and fifty words on progress in the course of study and research. If in the opinion of the Head of School a candidate’s progress is unsatisfactory, the Head of School will, through the Academic Adviser (Postgraduate Studies) advise the Executive Dean who shall review the student’s candidature and take such action as the Executive Dean deems necessary. Unsatisfactory progress may result in termination of candidacy.

12.  Three copies of the thesis shall be submitted in the form prescribed by the Faculty.

13.  The examination of the thesis shall be undertaken by two examiners approved by the Faculty on the recommendation of the appropriate Head of School. At least one examiner shall be external to the University. The examiners shall report their assessments in writing to the Head of School, for transmission to the Faculty.

14.  The Executive Dean, on considering the examiners’ reports and the advice of the Head of School, shall recommend to the Faculty either the award of an appropriate grade, or a grade to be awarded upon completion to the satisfaction of the Head of School of any revisions, minor amendments or corrections.

A thesis will be graded as Class I, Class II or fail. The grade for an MEd(Hons) degree will be that awarded to the thesis.

15.  Award of the degree

Upon completion at the level prescribed by the Faculty of Requirement 13 and upon complying with all other relevant Statutes and Requirements, candidates may be awarded one of the degrees of Master of Education with Honours.

Master of Education with Honours Programs

Programs include a General program and a range of specialist programs and comprise 36 units, consisting of a Masters thesis and such other studies as the Faculty may require. Theses in specialist programs must be on a topic relevant to the program.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION

1.  A candidate for the Graduate Certificate shall follow a course of study as specified in the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses to obtain a minimum of 12 units. The normal time for completion of the Certificate is one semester full-time.

2.1  Requirements for candidature

A person may enrol for the Graduate Certificate of Education if that person has completed the requirements for a degree, either from this University or from another institution of higher education and has included in that degree studies appropriate for the teaching for which they want to prepare. For some areas of teaching covered by the Programs attached to these requirements, equivalent qualifications appropriate to the area of teaching will be accepted.

2.2  Candidates who have included Education studies in their prerequisite degree shall consult the Executive Dean before enrolling.

2.3  Candidates wishing to use the subjects within the Graduate Certificate of Education as credit towards the Graduate Diploma of Education shall surrender the Graduate Certificate before the higher qualification is awarded.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA OF EDUCATION

1.  A candidate for the Graduate Diploma shall follow a course of study as specified in the Schedule shown under Postgraduate Courses to obtain a minimum of 24 units. The normal time for completion of the Graduate Diploma is one year of full-time or two years of part-time study.

2.1  Requirements for candidature

A person may enrol for the Graduate Diploma of Education if that person has completed the requirements for a degree, either from this University or from another institution of higher education and has included in that degree, studies appropriate for the teaching for which they want to prepare. For some areas of teaching covered by the Programs attached to these requirements, equivalent qualifications appropriate to the area of teaching will be accepted.

2.2  Candidates who have included Education subjects in their prerequisite degree shall consult the Executive Dean before enrolling.

CERTIFICATES, DIPLOMAS AND DEGREES IN INDIGENOUS STUDIES

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES

1.  Award Requirements

The Postgraduate Diploma of Indigenous Studies may be undertaken in the School of Indigenous Australian Studies.

2.  To qualify for the award a candidate shall pursue studies according to the prescribed course of studies shown under Postgraduate Courses.

3.  A person may enrol for the Postgraduate Diploma of Indigenous Studies if that person

3.1  fulfils the requirements for entry into the Postgraduate Certificate of Indigenous Studies, and
3.2  has successfully completed the requirements of the Postgraduate Certificate of Indigenous Studies.

4.  A candidate shall pursue studies to obtain a minimum of 24 units. The normal period of candidature shall be one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. The 12 units of study completed to fulfill the requirements of the Postgraduate Certificate may be credited towards the Postgraduate Diploma of Indigenous Studies.

5.  A candidate will be required to surrender the award of Postgraduate Certificate of Indigenous Studies before the award of Postgraduate Diploma of Indigenous Studies is conferred.

POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES

1.  Award Requirements

The Postgraduate Certificate of Indigenous Studies may be undertaken in the School of Indigenous Australian Studies.

2.  To qualify for the award a candidate shall pursue studies according to the prescribed course of studies shown under Postgraduate Courses.

3.  A person may enrol for the Postgraduate Certificate of Indigenous Studies if that person

3.1  has qualified for an appropriate Bachelor degree of this or another University in a discipline deemed suitable by the Head of the School of Indigenous Australian Studies; or
3.2  has qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to the requirements of 3.1; or
3.3  has alternative qualifications approved by the Faculty on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Indigenous Australian Studies.

4.  A candidate shall pursue studies to obtain a minimum of 12 units. The normal period of candidature shall be six months of full-time study or 12 months of part-time study.

MASTER OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES

1.  Award Requirements

The Master of Indigenous Studies may be undertaken in the School of Indigenous Australian Studies.

2.  To qualify for the award a candidate shall pursue studies according to the prescribed course of studies shown under Postgraduate Courses.

3.  A person may enrol for the Master of Indigenous Studies if that person

3.1  has successfully completed the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma of Indigenous Studies; or
3.2  has qualified for an appropriate Bachelor degree of this or another University and has at least two years work experience in relevant Indigenous issues.

4.  A candidate shall pursue studies to obtain a minimum of 36 units. The normal period of candidature shall be eighteen months of full-time study or three years of part-time study. The 24 units of study completed to fulfil the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma may be credited towards the Master of Indigenous Studies.

5.  Candidates with a Bachelor degree and at least two years experience in relevant Indigenous activities may, at the discretion of the Executive Dean in consultation with the appropriate Head of School, be granted credit up to a maximum of 12 units of study.

6.  A candidate will be required to surrender the award of Postgraduate Diploma of Indigenous Studies before the award of Master of Indigenous Studies is conferred.

7.  Requirements for the Masters degree

A candidate for the Masters degree may undertake either the coursework option or the research option.

Research Option

7.1  A candidate for the degree shall undertake a course of study leading to the submission of a thesis for examination. This may include a maximum of 8 units of coursework.

Coursework option

7.2  A candidate for the degree shall pursue studies to obtain a minimum of 36 units.

8.1  Supervision of candidates

Before permitting a person to enrol for the degree, the Faculty shall be satisfied that adequate facilities are available for the studies proposed.

8.2  A candidate when enrolled, shall be registered in the School of Indigenous Australian Studies and assigned to a supervisor who shall be a member of the academic staff. One or more associate supervisors may be appointed on account of their special knowledge of the candidate’s approved program of study, or in order to ensure effective supervision of the candidate during any periods spent external to the University.

8.3  Part-time candidates must attend the University as required by their supervisors and approved by the Faculty.

8.4  Periodically, the supervisors may be requested by the Head of School to report on the candidate’s work. If, in the opinion of the Head of School, the candidate’s progress is unsatisfactory the Head may advise the Faculty, which may terminate the candidature or take such action as it deems necessary.

8.5  The candidate may be required by the Head of School to undertake specified courses of study.

9.1  Evaluation by Research Option

The candidate shall undertake a course of study and/or research leading to the submission of a thesis. The thesis may not be submitted by a candidate earlier than one calendar year and usually after two years (for a full-time candidate) or four (for a part-time candidate), except in special circumstances, the Faculty may grant an extension of the relevant period.

9.2  A minor portion of the thesis may cover work undertaken before enrolment provided that this work has not been used in gaining another academic qualification.

9.3  Published contributions may be submitted to support or to form part of the thesis.

9.4  Candidates should present a progress seminar to members of the relevant School within six months of enrolment. The Head of School will report to the Executive Dean. All candidates are to present progress report at the completion of each 12 months of candidature unless the thesis is ready for submission within eight weeks of this period.

9.5  Candidates may with the discretion of the Executive Dean on the advice of the appropriate School, be granted an extension or suspension of candidature. The period of extension normally will be up to six months for a full-time and 12 months for a part-time candidate. Suspension of candidature normally will not exceed 12 months.

10.  Examination

On completion of the thesis, an original and two copies of the thesis, together with any separate published material, shall be submitted to the Registrar of the University.

10.1  The Faculty, on the advice of the Head of the School in which the candidate is registered, shall appoint two examiners of whom at least one shall be external to the University.
10.2  The Faculty, on the recommendation of the examiners, may require the candidate to undertake a written or an oral examination or both.
10.3  The Faculty, on considering the reports of the examiners, may recommend the award of the degree, refuse the degree, appoint another examiner or require the candidate to resubmit the thesis either re-written or including further research material. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners after resubmission of the thesis, shall not again be eligible for candidature for a Masters degree in the same discipline.
10.4  If the degree is awarded, the original of the thesis and any published supporting material shall be kept in the University Library and at least one copy of the thesis and supporting material shall be returned to the candidate.
10.5  The grade awarded to the degree is to be pass or fail only.
10.6  All corrections, if requested, are to be made:

10.6.1  if minor within three months of the date of despatch of the advice to the candidate;


10.6.2  if major within 12 months of the date of despatch of the advice to the candidate.



10.7  Award of the degree will be conferred when the following condition has been met: an acid-free copy of the thesis plus supporting documentation has been presented; that it has been deposited in the Library or a written guarantee has been provided by the School concerned that the said School holds all the material necessary for preparation of said copy.

11.  Evaluation by Coursework Option

The candidate shall undertake a prescribed course of study which will include subjects selected from Schedule A shown under Postgraduate Courses, or up to eight units from other Schools as approved by the Head of School. The submission of the original and two copies of a dissertation on an approved research topic may be required as part of the coursework.
