INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION PROGRAM

JCU BRISBANE, JCU SINGAPORE

This program provides an alternative pathway into tertiary education programs for those international students who are disadvantaged by their geographical location, family situation, educational history or other circumstances whereby they are unable to participate in other entry mechanisms.

It equips graduates with the skills and capabilities to enter tertiary study. The current program focuses on entry to Business, Hospitality Management and IT courses but, with expansion of specialist subjects in other areas, entry to other tertiary courses will also be possible.

It focuses on students who have successfully completed the equivalent of Australian Year 11 and who need to complete academic skills to a higher level which will facilitate their successful completion of tertiary studies.

The program is run over 30 weeks and consists of 720 hours of contact time not including assessment as is required by the latest Office of Higher Education guidelines for Foundation Programs for international students.

The program will be offered in Townsville and Cairns; the date of commencement is to be advised.

ENTRY TO BACHELOR OF BUSINESS AND BACHELOR OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

Students who have obtained a Certificate of Completion of the International Foundation Program will meet the entry requirements of the Bachelor of Business and the Bachelor of Hospitality Management.

ENTRY TO BACHELOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Students who have obtained a Certificate of Completion of the International Foundation Program and who have obtained a grade of credit or better in BR0106 (Introduction to Mathematical Concepts) and BR0108 (Introduction to Information Technology) will meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Information Technology.

UNIPREP

PREPARING FOR UNIVERSITY

UNIPREP is a preparatory course designed for mature-age people who are considering enrolling at JCU but who may feel they need additional skills, confidence and knowledge about university study before commencing a course. The program is open to people who have the potential to meet the ordinary or alternative entry requirements for James Cook University.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people from a low socio-economic background, non-English speaking background, who are from a rural and remote area, who have a disability and women in non-traditional areas of study, such as engineering and IT, will be given preference in the course. The program is offered on both the Townsville and Cairns campuses.

UNIPREP is offered twice a year, before the start of the next Study Period. In Cairns, the UNIPREP course runs over a two-week period from 9.15am-1.00pm weekdays usually in May-June and Nov-Dec each year. In Townsville, UNIPREP is offered in two stages, with the first week (‘Intro to Uni Life’) being offered in December and the second week (‘Academic Skills’) occurring in February of the next year and then usually again in June and July. During UNIPREP, prospective students are introduced to a variety of study skills, such as assignment writing, research and computer skills as well as developing a clearer insight into the course choices and support services available on campus.

BRIDGING COURSES

MATHS AND CHEMISTRY PREPARATORY AND BRIDGING COURSES

Many health science and science courses have prerequisites of Queensland Year 12 Chemistry and/or Maths B, in addition to the requirement of Year 12 English. Some also require the completion of Year 12 Physics. For those applicants who have not completed these Queensland Year 12 subjects or equivalents, JCU offers a range of bridging subjects at the Cairns and Townsville campuses.

Townsville campus

Preparatory Chemistry -– CH1020

Preparatory Chemistry is a four week subject taught on-campus in intensive mode in late January/February each year. This subject is also available in Study Period 2, though not in intensive mode. It is designed for students who intend to study Chemistry at University and who have not completed Year 12 Chemistry or equivalent, or who feel that their knowledge of Chemistry needs updating. This course can be used as a pre-requisite for JCU degree courses requiring Year 12 Chemistry. A student contribution amount is payable for this subject if taken as part of a degree course. A tuition fee is payable for this subject if taken as part of the Certificate of Science or as a Miscellaneous student.

Preparatory Mathematics -– MA1020

Preparatory Maths is designed for students who do not have a sound achievement or better in Queensland Year 12 Maths B or equivalent, and who require Maths B as a prerequisite for their degree course. The course is offered as an on-campus subject in Study Period 1 and as an intensive mode subject in late January/February each year. A student contribution amount is payable for this subject if taken as part of a degree course. A tuition fee is payable for this subject if taken as part of the Certificate of Science or as a Miscellaneous student.

Cairns campus

Preparatory Chemistry and Physics Foundations -– SC1021

This subject is designed for students who do not have a Sound Achievement or better in Queensland Year 12 Chemistry or Physics or equivalent and who require these as prerequisites for a degree course.

This subject is taught on-campus in Study Period 1 each year. A student contribution amount is payable for this subject if taken as part of a degree course. A tuition fee is payable for this subject if taken as part of the Certificate of Science or as a Miscellaneous student.

TERTIARY ACCESS COURSE OFFERED BY THE SCHOOL OF INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN STUDIES

TERTIARY ACCESS PROGRAM

The Humanities Tertiary Course (HUTAC) provides an alternative pathway into undergraduate studies for potential university students. The course aims to equip students with the skills and capabilities to enter mainstream tertiary study. The course is offered through the School of Indigenous Australian Studies and is open to all students who meet the residency/citizenship requirements as per DEST Guidelines for Enabling Courses.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must successfully complete an Internal Selection Process (ISP) to gain admission to the course. This process assesses the student’s status in relation to their level of literacy and numeracy.

Completion Requirements

The normal completion time for the course is one year full-time or two years part-time with students completing eight subjects with a total value of 24 credit points. It is possible however for students to apply for entry into a degree course after six months of study. This is dependent on their academic achievement and the entry requirement rules of the specific degree.

POSTGRADUATE QUALIFYING PROGRAM (BUSINESS)

The Postgraduate Qualifying Program (Business) is a non-award course that, if successfully completed, may qualify a candidate for entry into a Postgraduate (Award) Coursework Program in the Faculty of Law, Business and Creative Arts as follows:

Entry is available to international students only. The entry criteria are English language proficiency and academic proficiency as follows:

Entry equivalences by country are determined by the International Student Entry Requirements Committee.

Candidates completing this program do not receive any testamur, and may not use subjects successfully completed within the program for advanced standing towards a subsequent postgraduate course.

Concurrent enrolment with postgraduate level subjects is not permitted.
