Midwifery Practice 1

200 hours clinical placement. A 5-day residential learning school at commencement of first semester. Flexible delivery.

Available to students who have registration as a nurse; Bachelor’s preparation in nursing or a related discipline; twelve months clinical nursing practice prior to commencement of the course is recommended.

This foundation subject explores the collaborative partnership between the midwife and the childbearing woman in sociological and clinical practice contexts. The subject reflects the ACMI competencies while supporting clinical learning with a sound theoretical base. Modular learning discusses issues related to midwifery and women in a multi-cultural society; midwifery and the childbearing woman in pregnancy; midwifery and the childbearing woman during birth and beyond.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop a commitment to the concept of health education for the family unit, relating to all ages, levels of ability and cultural groups.
  2. apply knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate contemporary midwifery practice in relation to woman-centred and family-centred care;
  3. assess and monitor the woman and foetus or infant within the context of the family unit according to age, well being, socio-cultural background and environment;
  4. plan and implement appropriate care for the safety of the woman, the foetus or infant and her family during the child bearing continuum;
  5. establish relationships of trust and understanding with individuals and families;
  6. foster a multidisciplinary team approach.
