MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

A variety of postgraduate courses are available for students wishing to pursue a higher degree in Mathematics and Statistics. These include:

MASTER OF APPLIED SCIENCE (APPLIED STATISTICS)

The Masters of Applied Science by coursework and minor research project provides specialist training in the principles and practice of statistical applications.

Admission to the program requires a degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline (usually in the mathematical, biological, chemical, environmental or health sciences) and typically at least two years of professional experience. The minimum mathematical prerequisite is normally MA1000:03 and MA1003:03, but permission may be given for concurrent enrolment in one or both of these subjects in individual cases. A minimum of one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study is required to complete the course. Programs of study are subject to the approval of the Head of the School.

The course comprises:

  1. 18 units of coursework, normally chosen from the subjects listed below and including (unless previously credited) the specified core subjects;
  2. the project component of a value of 6 units.

Subject Schedule — Graduate Diploma of Science (Applied Statistics)
CORE
MA1401:03 Basic Statistics
MA2405:03 Statistical Methods
or
BS3001:03 Advanced Biological Statistics
MA3405:03 Multivariate Statistical Methods
MA5050:06 Research Project

MASTER OF APPLIED SCIENCE (MATHEMATICS)

The Masters of Applied Science by coursework and minor research project provides specialist training in the principles and practices of modern mathematics.

Admission to the course requires a degree or equivalent in mathematics or a closely related discipline. A minimum of one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study is required to complete the course. Programs of study are subject to the approval of the Head of the School.

The course comprises:

  1. 18 units of coursework which will normally be chosen in Mathematics at graduate level, but which may include up to 6 units in a related discipline;
  2. the project component MA5050:06.

Students enrolled in the course may be permitted to transfer to the Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) degree course on the completion, with good grades, of at least three graduate subjects.

Consult the Course Coordinator for subject information.

MASTER OF SCIENCE AND DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

The Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees consist of directed study and a research project and provide specialist training in the principles and practices of modern mathematics or statistics.

Admission to the course requires a degree or equivalent in mathematics or a closely related discipline. A minimum of one academic year of full-time study for a Master’s degree and three years for a doctorate are required to complete the course. Programs of study are subject to the approval of the Head of the School.
